Ultra-modern school building in the north of Munich

Ultra-modern school building in the north of Munich

There are only two comprehensive schools left in Bavaria. One of them is Willy Brandt Comprehensive School Munich, where our team from the Bachner Group is on site to help with the new building. This construction project in the Feldmoching-Hasenbergl district involved demolishing the existing building and replacing it with a five-story new building for the comprehensive school and the Munich North Technical College for Social Services and Health, spanning a total area of around 36,500 square meters.
"That is very big for a school," explained Bachner project manager Bekim Deliu. “Accordingly, this is also a major order.” He and his team have been on site since March 2023, working on the electrical technology and telecommunications.

The Project

The schools consist of four structures. The two that the technical college uses have been in operation since the 2024/2025 school year. Work is still underway on the other two, but they should be completed by this summer and ready for use at the start of the new school year. “Although parts of the building are already being used, this does not restrict our work. At most, we have to be careful when doing some of the noisy work so that we don't disturb school activities,” said Deliu.

Cornerstone of the electrical supply

Bachner is primarily responsible for the groundwork of the electronic infrastructure. For example, we were responsible for the cable routes and connecting the cables so that other trades could continue their work.
For the telecommunications, Deliu's team had to set up two different networks that could later be used as the base for the control systems: one for providing Internet access to the classrooms and common rooms, the other for running the building control system.
But there was also plenty of other work for our team to do. For example, they had to install media columns with power and Internet connections in classrooms and group work areas. The project also involved tasks like wiring the fire alarm system and electroacoustic systems. Not to mention the emergency power system, which supplies selected systems in the building with power for up to half an hour if there is a power outage. The Delius team also took care of the lighting control system, solar shading and building control system, which were implemented with the KNX control system.

The special requirements of a school

Every project has its own special features. This was also the case with Willy Brandt Comprehensive School and Munich North Technical College. When it comes to schools, one question is obviously very important: When does the break finally start?  One essential aspect of the answer is a clock system that is synchronized throughout the entire building. This involves equipping classrooms, the central area, the school hall, and the cafeteria with clock displays that are simple and easy to read.
The building also offers other special features. For example, chemistry labs need an extractor hood, otherwise known as a fume hood. This allows teachers to conduct experiments safely, because it immediately draws the generated gases, dust or aerosols out of the air. One connection the fume hood requires is a power connection.
Due to the size of the project, we had to anticipate very high staffing levels during peak periods, yet we were able to provide the necessary flexibility for the size of the team. As a result, we were able to meet the completion deadline for the start of the school year.

Off to the next structure!

All in all, Bekim Deliu drew a positive conclusion: "The project has gone well so far. I have my team to thank for that. They are a well-coordinated team, and I know that I can rely on them 100%. But our long-standing partners also played an important role in bringing this project to fruition.” The ultra-modern building certainly looks impressive already. We are keeping our fingers crossed for our colleagues and hope that everything goes smoothly for the second structure!
